India-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IBCCI) has evinced keen interest to buy bamboo pulp from the 700-acre bamboo plantation at Tuli and explore avenues to revive Tuli paper mill (NPPCL). This was conveyed by IBCCI president Abdul Matlub Ahmad to Business Association of Nagas (BAN) president Mongkum Jamir after both signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to cooperate, promote, facilitate and collaborate trade relations between the two organisations at Niathu Resort on Thursday.
The MoU signed on the sidelines of the B20 Business Summit at Kohima will aim to facilitate exchange of information, expertise and technology in the area of agriculture, food processing, bamboo, tourism, textiles, IT services, mineral and renewable energy.
It will also aim to promote and increase bilateral trade and investment between Bangladesh and Nagaland, besides providing necessary assistance and support to respective business communities to enhance trade and investment cooperation. The MoU agreed to collaborate on joint projects and initiatives between the Bangladesh and Nagaland and work towards reducing trade barriers and improving market access for each other’s goods and services. It was also agreed to hold periodic meetings to review the progress of the MoU and identify new areas of cooperation.
According to BAN media cell, Ahmad reiterated the support of Bangladeshi government for import and export of agro-based and other resources for mutual benefit and also suggested a direct flight between Sylhet and Dimapur. He said that Prime Ministers of Japan and India had agreed to make use of Matarbari deep sea port in Bangladesh at the earliest. He urged the Government of Nagaland to be the first among the North-eastern States to officially declare to use the deep sea port in line with the Government of India’s policy and in the interest of the State.
Taking note of the dominance of Bangladesh in textile sector, Mongkum requested IBCCI to start initiatives in the textile sector in Nagaland. While thanking the visiting team, he assured all cooperation to take the MoU forward. He also acknowledged the G20 Business Summit initiated by the Government of India and effectively hosted by the Government of Nagaland, which would result in economic growth in the State.
